The theme of this year's Golden Quill Awards Writing Contest is:


This year’s contest is a fundraiser for SLO NightWriters and is only open to members.  We plan to return to our usual Golden Quill Writing Contest in 2019.

Theme:       Each entry must depict the theme: THE END.  We are eager to see the talent and creativity in interpretation.

Categories: We are accepting fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir and poetry. All fiction, creative non-fiction and memoir submissions must comprise a complete story within the word limits.

Finalists:    All finalists will receive Certificates and the opportunity to read your submission at a SLO NightWriters General Meeting.

In addition, all First and Second Place winners will receive a free registration to the Central Coast Writers Contest 2018. Compliments of Conference Director, Teri Bayus.

Awards:     50% of the submission fee proceeds will be divided as cash awards for the winners. The remaining 50% will go to the SLO NightWriters' general fund.

Fee:            The fee for all submissions is $10.  Applicants may enter more than one category and/or more than one entry in any category; the fee must be paid for each entry.

Deadline:    The submission deadline is August 7, 2018. All entries must be received by this date to be eligible.  All entries must be paid in full by this date to be eligible.

Contest Rules

Eligibility:  All members are welcome to submit except Contest Committee members and Contest Judges.  Entries must be the original unpublished works of the authors and not previously accepted for publication. Co-authored works are not eligible.

Word Count:

·       Fiction  700 - 1000 words      

·       Creative Non-Fiction  700 - 1000 words

·       Memoir 700 - 1000 words

·       Poetry 40 lines

Deadline:  August 7th 2108.  All entries must be received by this date to be eligible.  All entries must be paid in full by this date to be eligible.

Judging:  Contest Judges will score each entry.  Judging will be blind; the contestant’s name will not be included with the entry.  A standardized quantitative scoring sheet will be used by each judge.  The decisions of the judges are final. 

Formatting Instructions:  All entries must follow this formatting in order to be eligible:

  • All entries must be typed and submitted electronically. (Contact us for exceptions if you are unable to submit electronically.)
  • Use only 12-point size Courier, Times New Roman or Ariel type font.
  • Adobe PDF format preferred; Word .doc and .docx are also acceptable.
  • Fiction, memoir and creative non-fiction must be double-spaced with a minimum of 1” margins all around. Page numbers must be included.
  • Poems may be creatively spaced and formatted; include page numbers if needed.
  • The top of each page of an entry must include only the title, entry category and word/line count.
  • The entry must not include any identifying information.
  • Each entry must be accompanied by a separate cover page.

Cover Page:  Each entry must be accompanied by a separate cover page that includes all of the below:

  • Author name, first and last
  • Title of entry
  • Entry category
  • Exact word count for all entries; line count for poetry
  • Author’s mailing address, phone number and email address


  • Submit entries electronically via email only (contact us for exceptions) to:
  • Submit a separate cover page with each entry submission. The cover page should be a stand-alone file.
  • Include the entry title and author’s last name on the Subject Line of the email. (Example: The Last Ride_Smith)

Failure to follow formatting guidelines or submit a cover page may result in disqualification.  Entry fees are not refundable and must be paid at the time of entry submission.  Entries will not be returned.

Notification:  Winning entrants will be notified by September 7, 2018.

Award Night:  Awards and Certificates will be awarded to winners at the September 11th General Meeting. Winners will be invited to read their winning entries on that night and over the months to come.  Finalists will also receive Certificates.

Publication:  All rights belong to the authors, SLO NightWriters and the Golden Quill Awards unless requested otherwise.
