The Premier Writing Organization On
California's Central Coast
Welcome to SLO NightWriters

Round Tables Critique Sessions began at 5:15 pm

Our Speaker tonight will be Mark Arnold: 6:30 pm

I don’t believe you could pick a better person for a talk on persistence.

Ten years ago I attended a keynote talk kicking off the Central Coast Writers Conference, where the speaker was asked whether a 50-year-old had any chance of publishing.

His answer was very short. He said, "No."

One year ago, when I was 66, I published my debut novel, Monster: the Story of Young Mary Shelley.  I think the key to my success is persistence.

Part of me agrees with Steve Martin when he says,

"Persistence is a great substitute for talent.”

I mean, if I had talent I wouldn’t have to work so hard, right?

But then, I happened to see the movie Galaxy Quest. The tagline for the movie is:

“Never Give Up. Never Surrender”

So the first part of this talk is one of those inspirational themed, “If you think you have it tough, you should know about what Mary Shelley went through.”  I’ll tell you what one of the most successful authors in history went through on her road to publication.

In the second part, I’ll show you several concrete steps I have found invaluable in cultivating the persistence you need to help you achieve your goal.

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm."  Winston Churchill

Terry Sanville and Susan Tuttle will be here to critique your work

Please keep your submission to two pages, typed, 12-point font, double spaced. This is a great—and safe—way to see what the critiquing process is all about, get valuable feedback from two fantastic writers, and practice reading your work to a small audience

Please bring 3 copies of your work, one to read from and one each for Susan and Terry.

Rosie MaKinney will moderate a second Round Table due to popular demand.

This Round Table Session will be held in the conference room to the left of the  meeting room.

Please don't forget to sign in first. 5:15 pm

Please Note: Rosie is taking  leave for a couple of months. I am organizing someone to fill in for Rosie while she's away.  Please bring your work as usual. We don't want you to miss out.

"The flavor of my group will be a safe and supportive facilitator led critique group comprised of peers with relatively equal footing and comparable expertise, where participants can practice their constructive critique skills as well as get feedback on their own writing. Submissions will be 2 x pages, double spaced, font size 12 and will be read by another person in order to see how the writing holds up on its own." Guidlines will be explained at the start of the group.
