The Bookshelf Writers Critique Group

August 9, 2022

Building & Bonding a Critique Group - One Group’s Journey

For over eight years our critique group, The Bookshelf Writers, has regularly met to support the writing and publishing efforts of Debbie Black, Kiki Kornreich, Judy Salamacha and Susan Vasquez.

The group began its journey after a carpool ride home from a SLO NightWriters general meeting. Each member writes in their own genre. Trust, respect and ultimately friendship bonded our reliance on each other to continue and expand our creative writing ventures.

The group took a major step forward with an idea generated during a ride home after volunteering at the San Francisco Writers Conference about four years ago. Since 2020, besides meeting to critique and work on our own manuscripts, we each contribute a piece targeted to attract readers living on the Central Coast.

Our columns are featured in the Estero Bay News under the banner Out & About with The Bookshelf Writers.

Join us to share how your critique group works or to discover ideas to help you build your own group.

We meet at the United Church of Christ, at 11245 Los Osos Valley Rd, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405.

Round Tables Critique Sessions begin at 5:15 pm

Terry Sanville and  Mark Arnold will be here to critique your work

Please keep your submission to two pages, typed, 12-point font, double spaced. This is a great—and safe—way to see what the critiquing process is all about, get valuable feedback from two fantastic writers, and practice reading your work to a small audience

This is an opportunity to get feedback on your work in progress and practice your constructive critiquing skills. It is also a great way to get to know other writers in our group. You do not have to bring along work to participate. Please keep submissions to double-spaced, 12 font, two pages.

Please email your submissions to Terry and Mark ahead of time:
