SLO NightWriters presents a half-day writing workshop on Saturday morning, September 14th, from 8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Attend in person or via Zoom.

8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.: Registration, networking, and continental breakfast
Join your fellow writers for coffee, conversation, and a continental breakfast! This is included in the cost of the workshop.
8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.: "Published! Tips and Tricks from an Indie Editor" (A.M. Larks)
A.M. Larks will cover the tips and tricks on submitting to and publishing in blogs, journals, agents, and publishers. This lecture will include an overview of the publication processes as well as behind the scene looks at publishers and how and why that affects the submission process. Whether you are just starting out or figuring out where to go next, this lecture will have something for you. This 40-minute presentation will be followed by a 20-minute Q&A session.
A.M. Larks’s writing has appeared in NiftyLit, Scoundrel Time, Assay: A Journal of Nonfiction Studies, Five on the Fifth, Charge Magazine, and the ZYZZYVA and Ploughshares blogs. She has served as a judge for the Loud Karma Productions’ Emerging Female and Nonbinary Playwriting Award and has performed her stories at Lit Up at Town Hall Theatre in Lafayette, California. She is the managing editor and blog editor at Kelp Journal. She is the former fiction editor at Please See Me, the former blog editor at The Coachella Review, as well as the former photography editor at Kelp Journal. A.M. How to research markets and literary agents online, find and subscribe to helpful resources, and submit your short pieces to literary journals, magazines, and contests. Bring your laptop and follow along!
10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: "Building a Better Critique Group” (Brenna Humphreys)
Belonging to a healthy writing group can motivate you, make you a better writer, and increase your productivity. But it's wise to choose your critique group carefully and consciously, to ensure you find a group that offers the helpful feedback you need to grow your enthusiasm and build on your development as a writer. In this session, SLO NightWriters Critique Group Coordinator Brenna Humphreys will teach you how to find a critique group that supports your writing goals, how to give and receive feedback, how to run a culturally sensitive and inclusive critique group, and how to be a good critique group member. This 30-minute presentation will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.
Brenna Humphreys is the founder of Walkthrough Productions, a boutique visual capture and documentation agency. Brenna spent ten years as a Senior Writer in the Creative Department at RPA where she won multiple advertising and branded content/entertainment awards. You asked for a more interactive event, and we heard you! After the presentation on Worshops and Critique Groups, we'll break up into small groups to share our work, offer and receive feedback, and put what we've learned into action. More details coming soon!
The in-person half-day workshop will take place at Chandler Hall, UCC San Luis Obispo, 11245 Los Osos Valley Road, San Luis Obispo, CA 93405. Zoom attendance will be available—all registrants will be emailed the Zoom link prior to the workshop.
